Let’s Go Shopping!

Today we’re going to look at a few places where you can shop ‘til you drop, get yourself a new wardrobe, find a new avatar, and deck yourself out in some fine jewelry—all without spending a dime! (Or even a $Linden.) Sounds too good to be true? HEY! WAKE UP! This is Second Life! If you can imagine it, you can do it!

The Free Dove

The Free Dove is one of SL’s oldest purveyors of quality freebies. Located in the Gallii region, it should be one of your first stops when you go shopping. Serious shopping.

Paloma has partnered with some of SL’s finest fashion designers to bring you samples of their works. And whether you have a standard avatar or one of the new mesh avatars, you’ll find a wide variety of items to fill your shopping cart.

Did you know that your standard SL avatar can wear mesh clothing? Many of the Free Dove’s items will work just fine on you.

Whether it’s clothing, shoes, jewelry, or makeup, check out the selection at the Free Dove. And check back often—Paloma frequently updates her inventory, so if you see something you like, be sure to grab it. It might not be there on your next visit!

New Resident Island

New Resident Island, or NRI, also offers free “shopping.” I put shopping in quotes because while you do have to buy their items, all of the prices are $L0; that is, free.

But besides shopping, NRI also offers tutorials where you can brush up on your basic SL skills. In addition, you can watch movies or learn how to build things. They even offer a variety of free building items. And in addition to clothing and fashions, you can even pick up a new avatar, complete with wardrobe and animation over-rider.

So if it’s clothing you need, a refresher course, or miscellaneous objects you’re looking for, hop on over to New Resident Island and look around.

Which brings us to…

New Citizens, Incorporated

NCI Kuula, to be exact. A very popular spot for building, learning, and just plain socializing.

Enjoy a balloon ride for an aerial view of the region, explore the extensive selection of freebies, make new friends—it’s all designed for the new SL resident.

Summing Up

While it’s always exciting to explore SL, these are a few excellent places to start.

If It’s Friday…

…It Must Be a New Hair Review!

Chris is the latest offering from Alli&Ali. It’s a masculine style, but it also looks god on women. Here’s how it looks on me:

Chris 2

Chris comes in several colors:

Chris Hair

It’s a bargain at $L250, but if you buy it now, you’ll get a refund of half the price, so it’s only $L125. I’m not sure how long the sale will last, so get it now! And while you’re at it, check out the sale on red hair styles as well.

My friend Ellie bought Chris, and she wears it in black:

Of course, Ellie loves all things dark and gothic, and she says she loves Chris.

As always, you can’t go wrong with Alli&Ali for all your hairstyle needs.

Or, How To Get Your Skin to Match Your Maitreya Lara Avatar

Lara, the current Maitreya avatar, comes with a HUD that, among other things, allows you to match Lara’s skin to the head and face of your base avatar. I’m assuming that once you’ve bought your Lara, you don’t have enough $Lindens left over to buy a mesh head. This post will show you how to achieve a perfect match between your body and your face.

Maitreya HUD

The Maitreya HUD controls many aspects of your appearance, including skin tones. If you can’t get an exact match using one of the presets, you can fiddle around with the Hue, Saturation, and Lightness controls. But even then, you may not be able to achieve a perfect match. HINT: That’s what the NECK FIX ON/OFF button is for. It blends your skin and base avatar colors for a closer match.

This is not, however, what I recommend.

Enter Glam Affair & Tableau Vivant

Glam Affair & Tableau Vivant is a site where you can find the perfect match for your skins. I discovered them through the Maitreya Lara Friends group, and checked them out. I purchased a set, and lo and behold, they were an exact match!

SL Daylight Sun Setting is rather harsh, but even in the harsh light you can compare this image with the one above.

Try Glam Affair & Tableau Vivant. I think you’ll be pleased with the results!

Katniss is Another New Style

My latest style discovery from Alli&Ali is Katniss. It’s another braided style, but it’s a little more formal than Jodie. I like to wear it when I’m dressed for an evening on the town with my beau.

Katniss 1

As you can see, it has a slight erotic dishabille touch to it. And while I’m wearing one of the many red shades, it comes in a wide variety of colors:

Katniss is available in all of the colors shown, and each color has its own HUD so you can select the exact shade you want! The set sells for $250L, which as of this writing, is about USD $1.00—a very reasonable price for the set.

Here are a couple more views of this style:

My New Favorite Hair!

From time to time I’ll be writing about new hair styles from Alli&Ali, my favorite hair vendor. I like their designs for several reasons:

  • They’re realistic
  • Most styles are low-prim
  • They can be resized too fit your avatar perfectly
  • Their prices are extremely reasonable. In fact, you can find a lot of them on the Second Life Marketplace for $1L (one Linden).

This week, I’m wearing A&A Jodie Hair Red Colors. It’s a pig-tail style, and it suits my personality:

Jodie 1

Jodie 2

Don’t like this particular shade? No worries! It comes with a HUD (heads-up display) that allows you to pick the shade you like:

Jodie HUD

Once you’ve resized the hair (if necessary) and selected your color, you can delete the scripts. WARNING: as with all styles from Alli&Ali, be sure to make a backup copy before customizing your hair!

Another nice feature of Alli&Ali is that many styles come with a hair-fitting alpha:

This is not included for all styles, because most can be resized to fit your head exactly.
It helps to cover head parts poking through the hair.
This may be useful if you use a rigged mesh hair.
If there is no alpha included and you still want one, come visit the mainstore and get one from the box on the info desk.

DISCLAIMER: As an approved Alli&Ali blogger, I received the entire Jodie range of colors to review for this blog.
